Eel & F'Fuoh Goblins are practical. When a young goblin is old enough to hold tools, they are given a fitting name and a role to fulfill and set to work. Strong swimmer by age 9? Great. Your name is Eel and you’re a diver.

So, when Volarak summoned Eel to work in the harbors of Haukeland, Eel figured it was as good a job as any. Besides, reclamation diving for Volarak Enterprises sure beat diving for Dwarven scrap back home on Feylund. Sure, the waters were polluted and murky, but the worst thing you were liable to stumble across was an angry fish or some toxic waste, not a heinous forgotten trap from the 9th Age! Eel’s colleague Prawn found one of those. One minute he brushed up against some old sword, and the next his skeleton just ripped itself free from his body and started walking across the bottom of the bay to Mab knows where.

Plus, working for Volarak, if you reclaimed something that wasn’t on the mission brief, you could keep it. Well, that wasn’t officially part of the contract, but it also wasn’t not part of it, so it was fair game as far as Eel saw things. This let him claim pieces of scrap here and there for his tinkering, and Volarak rewarded self-improvement.

It’s also how he found F’fuoh. Deep in a steaming crevice, Eel found a smooth bronze box covered in strange markings—so of course he opened it. Inside staring back at him was a weird little green lump of eyes and tentacles. In that moment, as their psychic bond formed, Eel caught glimpses of what the creature had been and would become, saw galaxies stretch before him, and felt the creature’s contradictingly boundless senses of timelessness and of loss.

But goblins are practical. So, Eel also saw an opportunity. F’fuoh grew quickly. Within a week, they were bigger than Eel himself. After a month, Eel could ride them. A month after that, the pair left scrap diving behind for a life as privateers aboard The Equilibrium. Now, having ravaged the seas for over a year, the inseparable duo fights with unmatched coordination, Eel laughing along to quips only he can hear.
