My solution for indicating the sides. Cut black and white thick foam into hexes to place under counters. Found foam at a local craft store.

3/4 inch wooden disks, available at craft stores and painted, make character markers easier to see on the map.

Game in progress. The map is safely tucked away under plexiglass.
